LITTLE STEPS
01 January 2023
Down the street, not far away, there is a little Hardware Shop.
From paint for a baby’s new room to a rubber tip for an old man’s walking stick. Travel through the pages of this book to find yourself down the street, not far away, in a little hardware shop with a big heart.

This is an English picture story book for young children, and each page echoes the same theme throughout the character's life from baby to elder.

However, every page is also accompanied by a few around-the-house objects in a thematic setting and their respective names in both English and the page's chosen foreign language (single different language per page).

The languages are: Maltese, Ukrainian, Chinese (Traditional Characters), Arabic, Croatian, Italian, German, Somali, French, Macedonian, Polish, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Greek, Spanish, Samoan, Armenian, and Danish.

Author: Speech Pathologist, and first-time author of a picture story book, Hazel Lekkas recalls the day her English/Literature secondary school teacher commented that she would one day write a book. Hazel has worked in mainstream primary and secondary schools with students and school staff to improve language and literacy outcomes. She has also co-created an app targeting phonological awareness with her colleague (and wonderful friend), Suzi Gurovski (née Josevski). Hazel lives in Melbourne with her ever supportive husband and beautiful twin daughters whom she loves to read with. Illustrator: Dasha Riley is an Australian artist, photographer, and illustrator. Her images have been widely exhibited, including by Getty Images Gallery in London, the Sony World photography awards 2016 (Second Place National Awards, Australia), and the Murray Art Albury (MAMA) National Photography Prize, where three of her works were acquired into the museum’s permanent collection. Dasha’s photography is represented by Lethbridge Gallery, Brisbane. Dasha has recently rekindled her love for illustration. Inspired by Disney’s mid-century era, her focus is on children’s book illustration, character creation and educational books.
