Rachel Alao (O.M.) migrated to Canada from Nigeria and settled in Winnipeg, where she currently resides. She graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a degree in sociology. Working primarily with newcomers and refugees to Canada and their families, she's done counselling and programs for the former International Centre (currently the Immigrant Centre), specializing in educational programs. She is the founder, executive director and program director of the Helping Hands Resource Centre for Immigrants, Inc., where she has continued this work. In addition, she is past president of the Immigrant Women's Association and has received numerous awards for her community-based work.In 2015, she was awarded the Order of Manitoba for her service to newcomers and other community works. Currently, she's a part-time RSW at the Charis Women's Centre (part of the Union Gospel Mission) in Winnipeg, reaching out to women with addictions and other issues. She is also the author of the book The Spirit of Empowerment: Encouraging Happiness, Fulfillment and Prosperity.
