In the shadowed streets of early twentieth-century London, magician Edward Renard-known to audiences as The Great Fox-has finally found peace. After years of battling supernatural forces and paying the terrible price of real magic, Edward and his wife Eve now live quietly above the Grand Illusion Theatre, preparing for the birth of their first child.
But peace is fragile.
When Eve begins dreaming of a buried stone door and whispers rising from beneath the earth, Edward soon discovers that something ancient has awakened. As strange coins appear, villagers begin to change, and the ground itself starts to breathe, Edward and Eve are drawn into a mystery tied to an ancient order known only as The Hollow Ones. These beings do not worship gods or demons, but silence itself-believing that names buried deep enough can awaken powers that should never be remembered.
With the help of the enigmatic crossroads spirit Papa Legba, Edward and Eve must confront a terrible truth: the barrow was never meant to be opened.
And something beneath the soil has already begun to answer.
As the boundary between life and death fractures and a nameless force rises from the depths of the earth, Edward must risk everything-including his own soul-to protect the woman he loves and the child they have yet to meet.
