Michael Ibbotson is a professor of neuroscience and biomedical engineering at the University of Melbourne. Outside his professional life, he has a passionate interest in politics, military history, aviation and ships. The Falklands War became a topic of major interest for him because it remains the only naval engagement of the jet era fought between near-peer adversaries. In this instance, understanding the air and sea battles proved daunting due to multi-media coverage, including periodically released official files, leading him to use his academic training to write a detailed analysis that brings together the wide range of references.
