Brought up in cities all over the world, Anna's journey into a deep love of plants began with a degree in herbal medicine. She passed the RHS diploma in Horticulture in 2000 and became a community gardener around North London, teaching children and adults in schools, play centres, community centres, housing estates and allotments. Anna has planted and designed many community and school gardens that focus on annual vegetable production as well as fruit trees, edible hedges, allotments and permaculture forest gardens. Anna lives in Hastings, designing, facilitating workshops and developing a small community farm.
“Anna Locke gives us a fascinating and refreshing insight into a world where food growing at home imitates multi-layered communities of Nature. Here, foraging is not simply about reaping wild food from the countryside but bringing a bit of the countryside into your garden. This is an engaging and encouraging read, full of experience, information and advice which makes us look at gardening in a different and rewarding way.”—Fergus Garrett, CEO and Head Gardener, Great Dixter House and Gardens “Anna's easy accessible style makes this introduction to permaculture gardening on a small scale a delight to read. Whether you want to make a small forest garden or just garden in a more ecological way, you'll find this a really useful book.”—Martin Crawford, Author, Founder of the Agroforestry Research Trust “What a brilliant concept and book. It gives a rich tapestry of formats; beautiful photographs and illustrations, diagrams and invitations for the gardener to have a go. I really like the way the information is presented. This is very much how I like to garden, as a forager and community grower with a forest garden area, this approach will be particularly useful when sharing this practice with the community, in our community garden. Having this holistic gardening handbook will be very empowering for others to garden in this way too.”—Charlie Gray, Horton Community Farm “The Forager’s Garden takes a whole new look at gardening, blending the wild with the cultivated to provide food, biodiversity and climate benefits.”—Craig Sams, Founder of Carbon Gold Biochar, Co-Founder of Green & Black's chocolate company, Former Chair of the Soil Association
