John Burgess is a freelance director best known for his productions of new plays. He worked for many years at the National Theatre in London, where he directed plays from the classical, romantic and modern repertoires as well as first productions of work by contemporary writers. He was the National Theatre's Head of New Writing 1989 - 1994. He has directed abroad in Switzerland, Scandinavia and North America.
