A darkly comic debut novel for fans of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, Matilda and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
This is a story so strange, it might almost be unbelievable ... Sisters Lake and Birdy are latest arrivals at the Charitable Home for Poor Unfortunates Touched by Tragic Circumstances. And if you think that sounds bad, that’s just the beginning. Luck is not on the sisters side, it seems. Or is it? Depending on the way you look at it, together these sisters are capable of surviving everything and anything. But it is going to take all of Lake and Birdy’s courage to face their biggest misfortune of all: the dreadful, the awful, the terrible … Miss MacGregor. A darkly comic, fantastic and fantastical tale from Damien Leith, with only a few embellishments, the very odd exaggeration, and much to enjoy.

Reviews for The Extraordinary Misadventures of Lake and Birdy (and their remarkable fortitude)

Move over David Walliams and Lemony Snicket, there is a new fantastical children’s author in town. Damien Leith’s debut middle-grade children’s story, “The Extraordinary Adventures of Lake and Birdy and their remarkable fortitude,” is a “can’t put down” book that will appeal to readers 8 years and older who are fans of Roald Dahl and the like … Damien Leith creates a cracking pace where each chapter and its interesting title has the reader going, “Oh I’ll read just one more chapter.” The narrator of the novel is sympathetic, friendly and even explains what some words mean in an amusing, chatty manner. I was sorry when the novel finished. I just hope that this is the first book in a series about the “extraordinary misdaventures of Lake and Birdy."" * Susan, read it with my 8 year old grandson, NSW, 5 stars (Better Reading) *
