Dr. Ray Solly enjoyed a first career as a navigating officer in the Merchant Navy aboard deep-sea dry cargo ships, supertankers and, during long vacations whilst studying, in the engagingly different world of coasters. He spent twenty years as a residential schoolmaster in two Independent schools, and has since developed a third career as a marine author of traditionally published non-fictional books, and numerous articles.
This is a truly great book...In addition to being encyclopedic in content, this book is lavishly illustrated with 211 images, most of which are in color. Some are amazing, particularly those showing ant-like workers in dry docks with ULCCs. -- PowerShips Without any doubt, the largest strength of the book are the more than 200 photographs and illustrations, many of them in color and/or never published before, that do not just illustrate the book, but tell the story of the book as a visual narrative. -- Naval Historical Foundation ...will be of interest to naval enthusiasts and modelers alike. -- AMPS Indianapolis
