Amid the darkness of World War I, Rudolf Steiner offered a profoundly spiritual response to the tragedy of global conflict. With compassion and clarity, each of these lectures begins with a reverent verse honouring the fallen, before unfolding a deeper perspective on the unseen forces shaping human destiny.

Steiner reveals the workings of spiritual beings, karmic patterns and the guiding influence of the Christ Impulse and Michaelic Spirits – forces he saw as central to both individual lives and the destiny of nations. From the prophetic nature of dreams to the cosmic significance of our thinking, feeling and willing, these lectures illuminate how the spiritual and material realms intertwine. Steiner explores the stages of spiritual perception – imagination, inspiration and intuition – and their role in awakening human consciousness. Topics such as the rhythm of sleep and waking, the etheric body, and the clash between the cultures of materialism and spiritual insight are directly relevant to our modern condition.

Far more than a historical reflection, this volume is a profound meditation on the spiritual evolution of humanity, and a timeless guide for those seeking meaning amid external upheaval. It speaks to the soul’s journey through suffering, and the redemptive power of spiritual consciousness.

The revised edition of these lectures features an introduction by translator Anna Meuss, extensive editorial notes and an index. Fourteen lectures, Sept. 1914–July 1915, Berlin, GA 157

Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) called his spiritual philosophy “anthroposophy”, meaning “wisdom of the human being”. As a highly developed seer, he based his work on direct knowledge and perception of spiritual dimensions. He initiated a modern and universal “science of spirit”, accessible to anyone willing to exercise clear and unprejudiced thinking. From his spiritual investigations Steiner provided suggestions for the renewal of many activities, including education (both general and special), agriculture, medicine, economics, architecture, science, philosophy, religion and the arts. Today there are thousands of schools, clinics, farms and other organizations involved in practical work based on his principles. His many published works feature his research into the spiritual nature of the human being, the evolution of the world and humanity, and methods of personal development. Steiner wrote some 30 books and delivered over 6000 lectures across Europe. In 1924 he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world.
