The Citizen Reader introduces students to the various functions that a government performs and the rights and duties of its citizens. They learn about the different branches of government, how people are selected for posts in the different branches, and what activities each branch is engaged in. They will come to understand that it is their duty to serve their country as patriotic citizens, and that they will be better able to fulfill this duty by some knowledge of the institutions of their country.
