The capability approach developed by Amartya Sen and Martha Nussbaum has become an important new paradigm in development economics. Its central question is: what are people able to do and to be? Applied to development economics, the capability approach has radically altered the way in which people view how resources can and should be utilised to assist people to change the circumstances of their lives, so that they become capable of choosing how to live and function well.

This book examines the application of the capability approach in development practice and in public policy, focussing on its adoption in the Asia-Pacific region, in both developed and developing countries. This is the first edited book that explores the empirical applications of the capability approach in the practice of development and public policy from a multi-disciplinary perspective, drawing together contributors from areas including development studies, health policy, political science, political theory, political economy, architecture, indigenous studies, urban planning and communication technologies.

Reviews for The Capability Approach: Development Practice and Public Policy in the Asia-Pacific Region

This is a very good introduction of the capability approach [...] The book provides a well-edited, serious-minded introduction to the ideas behind the capability approach and its application in multiple contexts. [...] The scope of this book should advance the application of the cpaability approach and is an invaluable resource for those interested in its theoretical aspects and applications. - Peter Larmour, The Australian National University, in Journal of Southeast Asian Economics, Vol 30, August 2013
