ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- Sophie Green has carved out a niche for herself, delivering warm and heartfelt stories of assorted women who come together in an activity external to their everyday lives, who find both community, support and the unexpected in their doing so. This one is no different, and just as satisfying as her previous novels.
Bellbird River, 1998, sees Alex, a new high school teacher uproot her daughter from Sydney in search of a life less ruled by expensive rent and long commutes. Gabrielle, world famous for her beautiful soprano voice, has returned to the town of her origins after a botched operation, and is staying with her beloved cousin Victoria. Victoria, the town matriarch who knows everyone and everything, didn't know her husband was having an affair. Janine works in her family's bakery and is hiding secret relationships; whilst another newcomer, Debbie is just plain hiding from her past. When all these women find themselves in the community choir, their lives will be altered in different ways, and they will all discover real family and true friendship. A nicely comfortable read, best served with a pot of tea and a plate of your favourite biscuits! Lindy
