English artist and illustrator Walter Crane (1845-1915) is renowned for his involvement in the Arts and Crafts movement. He was born in Liverpool, England, and had early artistic skill. He started off as a wood-engraver's apprentice before moving on to become an illustrator for a variety of works, such as children's books and fairy tales. Bold, vivid colors and elaborate motifs defined Crane's aesthetic. He was a major member of the Arts and Crafts movement, which valued traditional workmanship and disapproved of the Industrial Revolution's mass-produced items, and was greatly inspired by Japanese art and William Morris' work. The Bases of Design and Line and Form are only a few of the significant works on art and design that Crane authored in addition to his work as an artist. Additionally, he supported socialist and political causes and advocated for social justice and reform through his artistic output. Crane's art is still praised today for its aesthetic appeal, masterful workmanship, and social insight. He had a huge impact on the growth of ornamental art, design, and book illustration as a key player in the Arts and Crafts movement.
