Engineering Methods turns governance engineering from foundations to practice. It opens with the five-tier authority spectrum and the formal reading of a specification, the bridge between principle and method.

The book develops the ten method classes that constitute the discipline's working repertoire: specification, verification, audit, hardware enforcement, recovery, composition, compliance, adversarial design, self-modification governance, and reproducibility. Each method class is treated as a distinct engineering object with its own formal definitions, threat models, performance requirements, and verification primitives. Together they form the procedures by which authority is engineered: specified, verified, audited, and recovered across operational cycles.

The five-tier authority spectrum (from passive observation through autonomous action) provides the framework within which each method operates. The specification reading procedure of Chapter 14 provides the formal grammar by which specifications become engineering artifacts. Subsequent chapters derive the methods themselves: how specifications are verified before deployment; how audit trails are constructed for post hoc accountability; how hardware enforcement provides a fail-safe substrate; how recovery methods restore correct authority after fault, drift, or compromise; and how the remaining method classes address composition, compliance, adversarial robustness, self-modification governance, and reproducibility.

Written for engineers, architects, AI safety researchers, and policy professionals working on the implementation layer of autonomous systems governance, the book treats authority not as a political concept to be debated but as an engineering quantity to be specified, computed, and verified.
