John Fairley was born in Liverpool and served as an RNVR officer aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Albion. He is the author of Horses in The Great War, Heartbeat and Beyond, Armistice and the Aftermath, Fighting in the Sky: The Story in Art and The Royal Navy in Action all published by Pen and Sword Books. His other works include The Art of the Horse, Racing in Art and Great Racehorses in Art and is joint author of The Monocled Mutineer, the celebrated BBC television series. A noted documentary and sports television producer, he was Director of Programmes at Yorkshire Television. A scholar of The Queen's College, Oxford, he is married with three daughters, and lives in the Yorkshire racing town of Malton.
