Reviews for The Aron Family to 1743: The Genealogy of a Lithuanian Jewish Family

The Arons resided in six towns located near where the borders of Lithuania, Belarus, and Latvia meet. This region is approximately 140 kilometers from Vilnius and is also situated close to Ukraine and Russia. The towns are: Rimse, Naujasis Daugelisis, Vidzy, Zarasai and Dukstas. Between 1648 and 1721, three wars-including the Khmelnytsky uprising of Cossacks, peasants, and Tatars against the nobles-resulted in the loss of 40% of the population. ... Leizer Orlin, the oldest identified Aron ancestor was born during this post-war period in 1743. He probably lived in Vidzy. In 1795, the Russians took over Poland, Lithuania and parts of modern Ukraine and Belarus and ruled until 1918. They suppressed the Lithuanian language and culture and favored Orthodoxy over Catholicism. Also, they restricted Jews to the Pale of Settlement and limited their occupational opportunities. In 1796, Symon Orlin, son of Leizer, moved from Vidzy to Naujasis Daugeliskis, probably due to the new laws.
