Richard Ramirez, popularly known as the Night Stalker, was sentenced to death for the murders of 13 People in 1989. Ramirez was therefore one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history. He was never executed and instead died on death row awaiting his appeal to the Ninth Circuit. However, Ramirez's appeal was never heard.
