Brian J. Wagner-Yeung provides teachers with the tools to give every student the appropriate support needed in music classrooms, especially in diverse settings, by presenting evidence-based strategies and examples of accessible music-making in action. While the book focuses on students with disabilities, the strategies presented can benefit all. This book dives into vital concepts such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), multisensory learning, task analysis, assistive technology, and conceptual learning. With many examples and practical tips, this text shows how these concepts can be incorporated into various types of classrooms. When these concepts are utilized regularly, the music classroom becomes a space that is accessible for all. Music educators will gain practical ideas that they can incorporate into their classrooms and ensembles, allowing all students to have a sense of belonging and welcome. This resource is a supportive aid for pre-service and in-service music educators, administrators, studio teachers, teaching artists, non-profit organizations, arts educational organizations, music therapists, and more.

Reviews for The Accessible Music Classroom for All

Wagner-Yeung has created an inclusive text that should be required reading for all music educators, from pre-service to experienced. He dispenses practical knowledge and strategies to make the music classroom accessible in every way. -- Krysta Mirsik DePuy * arts education programs instructor, Berklee Institute for Accessible Arts Education * This is the book I wish I had when I first started to teach! Filled with insight based on Wagner-Yeung’s experiences and research, his passion for teaching all students is obvious on every page. -- Maureen Butler * retired music teacher; accessible music education chair, New Jersey Music Educators Association * As the population of learners has become increasingly diverse, reaching every student in the music classroom has become increasingly challenging. The Accessible Music Classroom for All offers practical information, lesson plans, and resources that music educators can use right away to improve their teaching practice for all of their students. The structured approach provided in this book can help music educators be better prepared to teach the students of today and tomorrow. -- Rhoda Bernard * managing director, Berklee Institute for Accessible Arts Education; assistant chair, music education, Berklee College of Music *
