Written by a historical geographer who has spent much of his life in the region, Sussex is the definitive history of this unique English county. With an entertaining and highly detailed narrative, complemented by almost 150 superb illustrations, Peter Brandon takes us on a tour of Sussex's market towns, hills, castles, seaside resorts, gardens and churches, from Brighton to Ashdown Forest, and from Gatwick Airport to the Ouse. Every feature of the county is covered. Sussex has often been featured in art and literature over the centuries, not to mention in the chronicles of history, and to this day it remains a centre of national cultural significance. With its exquisite natural beauty, varied landscapes, local traditions, international transport systems, diverse communities, and strong links with the worlds of education and music, Sussex is still one of the most interesting and important counties in Britain. Dr Brandon's erudition and his infectious enthusiasm for his native home make Sussex a fascinating read for anyone interested not only in the county but in English history.

Peter Brandon was born in Sussex and has lived in the county for the past forty-five years. His maternal forebears have been associated with Sussex for centuries and he has been immersed in its affairs as a part-time lecturer at the University of Sussex and as a chairman of the Sussex branch for the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England. He is a historical geographer who was formerly head of the Department of Geography at the University of North London, and he has written and edited several books on Sussex and S.E. England including The Making of the Sussex Landscape (1974), The South Saxons (1978), The South Downs (1998) and The Kent and Sussex Weald (2003). He is an ardent walker (and outdoors man) who is concerned as much with the present and future of the county as with its past.
