This book explores what is entailed in serving as a steward of the living tradition of the Christian faith in the world of education. It examines: -tradition as a resource -leadership -education as a spiritual endeavor -curriculum and Christian learning, and -the task of connecting tradition to culture John Sullivan engages with historical perspectives and contemporary professional and cultural realities in addressing intellectual and spiritual dimensions of Christian education and the endeavor to make tradition both accessible and meaningful to those for whom it is unfamiliar. Themes pervading the book include fostering a critical appreciation for and a creative appropriation of the living tradition of Christianity, fluency and flexibility in sharing that tradition, vocation and vulnerability, and a striving for interconnectedness and integration in teaching and learning at school and university.

Reviews for Steward of a Living Tradition: Christian Scholarship and Educational Practice

""Few are as well positioned to write of stewarding a living tradition of Catholic education as John Sullivan. Sullivan brings a lifetime of reflection to bear on concrete questions of how educational practice can be a contemporary participation in the gospel and engagement with a Christian conversation stretching back across the centuries. He ranges across matters of pedagogy, leadership, curriculum, learning, vocation, and more, bringing careful Christian engagement to each. There is much here worth pondering and working into our practices."" --David I. Smith, Director, Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning, Calvin University ""Professor Sullivan's latest book, Steward of a Living Tradition, captures the delicate balancing-act of ensuring that the voices of tradition can continue to speak fluently to contemporary scholars. This collection of essays is essential reading for all with an interest in the relationship between liberal studies and education. It confirms the author's status as one of the most engaging, informative, and coherent thinkers in the world of Catholic educational studies."" --Leonardo Franchi, Lecturer of Pedagogy, Praxis, and Faith, University of Glasgow ""This book presents some of the key publications of over twenty-five years of scholarship devoted to research on Christian faith, theology, and Christian education. Topics range from medieval wisdom and monasticism to Blondel and Newman and a rich engagement with some major themes in Catholic education including leadership and vocation. These selected articles and book chapters are the product of the exemplary career of Professor John Sullivan, a leading thinker in Catholic theology and education."" --Stephen McKinney, Professor, School of Education, University of Glasgow ""This book is a collection of beautifully written, accessible, eminently readable and scholarly chapters. It is essential reading for those interested in how Christian faith and theological understanding relate to educational practice. The book is a testament to and a record of John Sullivan's exceptional lifetime's work as a Christian educator in secondary schools, universities and in the church."" --Patricia Kieran, Associate Professor, Mary Immaculate College ""Sullivan's skill lies in his ability to combine lived experience of Catholic education with the theological and human aspects needed to bring credibility to the sector in times of change, challenge, and mistrust. This book is an excellent road map for anyone who genuinely wants to become a 'living logo' and authentic leader in the Catholic educational sector these days. It will help them to strategically ground respect for people as the key linchpin around which everything else rotates. Steward of a Living Tradition is a must read for all involved across the Catholic sector these days!"" --Ann Marie Mealey, Director of Catholic Mission, Leeds Trinity University ""In Steward of a Living Tradition, John Sullivan presents the choicest fruits of his distinguished career exploring what might constitute a truly Christian approach to education. Winsomely erudite, theologically rich, and at times deeply pastoral, this book will be treasured by generations of those seeking to advance the work of connecting the Christian faith with the task of education."" --Kyle R. Hughes, Lecturer in New Testament, Reformed Episcopal Seminary
