What if churches focused less on wanting other Christian traditions to become more like theirs, and more on exploring what they might learn from them? Might this not only help churches to deepen faith, mission, and service, but also revitalize the ecumenical landscape with new possibilities? This is the provocative and inspiring vision presented by Receptive Ecumenism, a movement which has crossed denominations and continents, engaging church leaders, ecumenists, scholars, and Christians in their everyday lives. Spirit Flowing Like Water presents the latest conversations in this field. It not only engages leading scholars and practitioners of Receptive Ecumenism between churches but also explores the possibility of learning from difference within a church community--""Internal Receptive Ecumenism""--and adapting the approach to a wider ecumenism beyond the visible church. Church leaders, ecumenists, and theologians from five continents have contributed chapters on transforming ecumenism, practicing mission in context, and broadening the horizon. They write not only for those already engaged in ecumenical work but with an invitation to all communities, leaders, and individuals to take a fresh look at what walking together in Christ means in our polarized world.

Reviews for Spirit Flowing Like Water: New Conversations on Receptive Ecumenism

""This volume is a landmark in contemporary ecumenical theology. It gathers a rich diversity of voices, reflecting the growing significance of Receptive Ecumenism as one of the most dynamic and promising models of ecumenical engagement today. More than a study of the method, the book becomes its own embodiment--Receptive Ecumenism incarnate--through shared perspectives, mutual listening, and theological generosity. A timely and meaningful contribution to the ongoing pilgrimage of unity to which all Christians and churches are called."" --Andrej Jeftic, Director, Faith and Order Commission, World Council of Churches ""This new publication in the field of Receptive Ecumenism is truly stimulating and empowering as it puts the light of the ecumenical endeavor on the lampstand and lets it shine widely. Eminent scholars, the 'who's who' in the field of Receptive Ecumenism, skillfully articulate the transformational dynamics of ecumenism and its impact on wider society. In Spirit Flowing Like Water, new voices in the field creatively expand the horizon and develop conceptual ideas further."" --Simone Sinn, Professor of Religious Studies and Intercultural Theology, University of Münster ""A large theological capital and good material resources can compromise the best ecumenical intentions. There will be no lasting or fruitful ecumenism without sincere interest in what the other brings with her or him. 'For whenever I am weak, then I am strong' (2 Cor 12:10b)."" --Anders Wejryd, Former President for Europe, World Council of Churches
