Ilmari Käihkö is an associate professor of War Studies at the Swedish Defence University, and a veteran of the Finnish Defence Forces. His research focuses on cultural sociology of war, underpinned by ethnographic study of contemporary war and warfare.
"'Käihkö's monograph is a fine piece of work which will make an important contribution to the study of the Ukraine conflict and the role of militias.' - Sir Lawrence Freedman, professor emeritus, Department of War Studies, King's College London, UK 'In his monograph, Käihkö offers a lot of novel insights on the general issues such as the dynamics of strategy, the role of social cohesion and the relationship between the wider society and soldiers in the context of non-conventional military structures, and also provides valuable in-depth analysis of the case study of the Ukrainian volunteers. I have learned a great deal from this book. I am sure the book will be a big success."" - Sinisa Malesevic, professor/chair of Sociology, University College Dublin, Ireland"
