A sketch is a way to both think and remember at the same time. As architects, it is one of our main tools for experiencing the world.

Each of the sketches included has its own voice and character; its own independence. We started putting these pieces together on their own page as originally drawn, but something unexpected happened... We began overlaying certain sketches, allowing for serendipitous relationships to blossom.

As the drawings began to stack, what became important was no longer their original context, but the juxtapositions of line weights, tones, textures, and rhythms. It also emphasized the individual signature of each artist's lines.

this book includes drawings completed across many places and times, by two different artists with their own approaches. Jason and Giovanni met during architecture school and have long learned from each other. This is their first published book of sketches.

We hope that you enjoy these unexpected moments as much as we did finding them.

Giovanni is multi-media artist and trained architect. He established the design studio Shine Design in Brooklyn NY where he works on bespoke furniture from reclaimed wood, poetry, short stories, ambient soundtracks, as well as larger scale art installations. He sketches only with a pen, because it forces commitment and focus. Jason is an architectural designer living in Pittsburgh, PA. Studying at Virginia Tech, he fell in love with Appalachia. Moving to hilly Pittsburgh was only natural. Professionally, he works on community-oriented projects and the adaptive reuse of the city's building stock. He spends his free time studying the complexity of city by foot, bike, and pen.
