Ray Howell has recently retired as the University of Wales Professor of Welsh Antiquity. He holds BA, MA and PhD degrees and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He has directed numerous excavations and has contributed to archaeological programmes on the BBC, Discovery Channel, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, S4C and Smithsonian Channel, as well as on Channel 4’s Time Team. He lives in South Wales.
Ray's lectures and field trips, when he and I were colleagues at Newport, were always entertaining as well as scholarly, a happy combination that hooked students from all kinds of backgrounds. His book, crammed with knowledge and peppered with trenchant, often hilarious anecdotes, exemplifies this approach. -- Miranda Aldhouse Green * Current Archaeology Magazine *
