This new book combines the latest discoveries with Professor Howell's decades-long study of the Iron Age in Wales to provide a new understanding of the Celtic peoples of South Wales. Readers will encounter a complex and sophisticated society and will then see how that society responded to the Roman invasion and occupation of their territory before considering the nature of the post-Roman world which followed. Professor Howell concludes by outlining a new programme of research, building on recent discoveries, which can take us even further in understanding these fascinating, if at times, enigmatic people.

Reviews for Silures: Resistance, Resilience, Revival

Ray's lectures and field trips, when he and I were colleagues at Newport, were always entertaining as well as scholarly, a happy combination that hooked students from all kinds of backgrounds. His book, crammed with knowledge and peppered with trenchant, often hilarious anecdotes, exemplifies this approach. -- Miranda Aldhouse Green * Current Archaeology Magazine *
