The story is set in the ordinary Xiaoyangjuan Hutong in Peking during the Anti-Japanese War. Through the humiliating and miserable experiences of many small potatoes from several families, it reflects the perplexed social mentality contented with temporary ease and comfort of Beijing citizens during the war and represents their slow, painful and difficult awakening process when the country was ruined and the people were starving.
