Drawing on Canadian case studies, Selling Social offers insight into the successes and challenges regarding social procurement and social purchasing from the perspective of social enterprises.

Since the 2010s, all levels of governments in Canada have gradually initiated social procurement as a policy tool to further their social values and political agendas. Social enterprises of various shapes and sizes across the country have served as partners in the execution of those agendas. Selling Social examines the experiences of these enterprises in social procurement and social purchasing.

Selling Social presents the findings of a three-year Canadian research project detailing experiences of work integration social enterprises (WISEs) selling their goods and services to organizational purchasers, including governments, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Drawing on survey findings and interviews, the book explores a diverse group of social enterprises from across Canada, showcasing their successes and their challenges based on real-life examples to aid social enterprises that are considering this path. The book emphasizes the importance of including social and environmental considerations in procurement and purchasing decisions, particularly at larger scales and through public policy. In doing so, Selling Social extends the understanding of social enterprises beyond their social and economic outcomes and into the broader movement toward responsible procurement and purchasing.

Reviews for Selling Social: Procurement, Purchasing, and Social Enterprises

"""A Canadian first on the challenges and opportunities of social procurement. Selling Social is a must-read for scholars, leaders of social enterprises and non-profits, and policymakers who seek to create greater social value using the power of purchasing. Its sensitive and practical treatment of social procurement is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Jack Quarter who was instrumental in advancing the study of social enterprise and social accountability and who mentored so many emerging scholars.""--Susan Phillips, Professor of Public Policy and Administration, Carleton University ""Selling Social continues the long legacy of social economy research and knowledge mobilization spearheaded by the late and much-missed Jack Quarter. In this book, the editors bring together a commendable and collaborative case study project on how Canada's social enterprises sell social value. This book does an outstanding job of documenting and assessing the state of social procurement and social purchasing as part of Canada's vibrant social economy. This is a must-read for policymakers, researchers, teachers, and students desiring to know more about and broaden inclusive forms of economic practice.""--Marcelo Vieta, Associate Professor in the Program in Adult Education and Community Development Program and Director of the Centre for Learning, Social Economy & Work, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto"
