Sebastian County, Arkansas Biographical and Historical MemoirsSebastian County, Arkansas ""is bounded on the north by the Arkansas River, which separates it from Crawford County; on the east by Franklin and Logan Counties; on the South by Scott County, and on the west by the Indian Territory."" The settlement of what would become Sebastian County ""began at Fort Smith in 1817, and then followed down the river; that the portion bordering on the river was first settled, and that the central and southern portion of the county was not settled to any considerable extent until after the year 1840."" Sebastian County was created by an act of the General Assembly on 10 January 1851.
The historical portion of this book presents descriptive accounts of the county's Natural History; Original Occupancy; Settlement; County Organization; Agriculture and Horticulture; The Courts; Representative Men; Military (Civil War); Cities, Towns and Villages; Education; and Religion. Several transcripts of letters are included.
The second portion of this work is devoted to detailed biographical sketches, which provide insight into the lives of the people who lived in the county and give a unique perspective on its history. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
