We are all risk takers.

In life and in business, human attitudes towards risk are terrifyingly irrational. We hugely over-estimate short-term risks (standing near a cliff edge, or selling to someone who may not be credit worthy) but we under-estimate long-term risks (smoking, or acquiring a large company).

This book seeks to understand risk from the human perspective. Why do we decide the things that we do, and how can we do it differently or better? This book should be required reading not just for students of business or economics, but for anyone faced with making important decisions.

Reviews for Risk: All That Matters

An insightful book in an easy-to-read style, which combines wide-ranging research and a comprehensive overview of the many aspects of risks with pertinent examples and useful insights into the trends most likely to impact our futures. -- Cathy O'Dowd, first woman to climb Mount Everest from both sides At last a comprehensive and practical book on risk; Steeper and Stockdale take us on a journey that both enlightens and informs. This is a must read book and all of today's executives should have this on their book shelf. The best is left for last in the 100 ideas section; a checklist for life, for reading, for perhaps just testing your own appetite for risk! -- Tracey L Reddings, CEO at JP Morgan How can a business book be a page turner? This one is. As someone who deals with risk daily, I thought I had a good understanding of it and myself with respect to risk. After reading this book I know both myself, and how I can use risk to my advantage better. Bravo. -- Kelsey Ramsden, Canada's Top Female Entrepreneur (Profit Magazine - 2012, 2013) An insightful and comprehensive guide that explores and explains the many concepts that influence our choices and decision making. The book illustrates many interesting parallels that we can resonate with normal life. Once started, very difficult to put down and the 100 ideas at the end provides a really enjoyable sting in the tail. -- Andy Halliday, Team Manager, England & Great Britain Men's Olympic Hockey Risk is a widely misunderstood four letter word! This readable and well-presented book fills a useful gap we all need to know more about. We are taking risks all the time, but exactly what they are, and how they can be managed more effectively, should help us all lead more rewarding - and longer - lives. -- Dr Bruce Lloyd, Emeritus Professor of Strategic Management, London South Bank University Most people assume that risk assessment is a topic best left to financial managers and epidemiologists - authors Steeper and Stockdale show us why this orientation deserves an about face. We can make better decisions and leave less rich living on the table by learning to think about, assess, and navigate risk in our personal and professional lives. Sharing science and stories, the authors lay out a road map for an individual approach to risk that can give a person more options and more peace of mind about the uncertainty that surrounds us. -- Professor Teresa Nelson, Ph.D. Director - Entrepreneurship Program, Simmons College, Boston, USA Sue Stockdale and Clive Steeper have written very practical, relevant and helpful books. I enthusiastically recommend Risk: All That Matters, Motivating People In A Week and Cope With Change at Work. The approach taken is thought provoking. The narrative is highly accessible with a very useful combination of case studies and internationally recognised models. These are all explained in a clear, concise and compelling way. On top of this the reader gains valuable insights based on Clive and Sue's very considerable experience. -- Ian Williams, Executive Director, Caplor Horizons
