Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has seemingly burst into public consciousness with sudden vigor. Previously relinquished to computer science journals, it erupted as the unrelenting topic of public media with most of the furor surrounding chatbots, like ChatGPT. Although many educators began worrying about the implications of AI in student learning and creative activity, this book will demonstrate that AI can be harnessed as a source of inspiration and meaningful instruction. With an emphasis on useful classroom strategies as well as a consideration of the ethics of AI, this book seeks to start a conversation in this nascent area of research and practice. The primary focus is on the use of AI in the secondary English classroom, but educators in other disciplines will find plenty of ideas and information.

Reviews for Revolutionizing English Education: The Power of AI in the Classroom

Revolutionizing English Education explores the possibilities and potential value of AI in teaching and learning. This edited collection shares the experiences of numerous educators who advocate for AI. All maintain its value to learning. Teachers using AI to create lesson plans still need knowledge of content, lesson structures, and student needs--much like using a predesigned curriculum. For the ELA classroom, AI can generate writing models of the stages of the writing process, from generating topics to analyzing quality writing. Teachers and students can create these models and then analyze them for strengths and weaknesses; these discussion can lead to deeper understandings of writing practices. AI does not restrict users' critical thinking abilities, yet responsibility for ethical use does lie in users, meaning that they should question and explore the validity and quality of AI-generated materials. Quality training in best practices and proper use of AI is the key for successful outcomes. It is equally important for AI users to understand how AI algorithms function in developing writing. Regardless of how one feels about AI, it is not going away. Thus, this text provides a solid foundation of knowledge and education on AI and its uses in the classroom. Recommended. Advanced undergraduates through faculty; professionals.
