Matt's Old Masters, an accompaniment to Matthew Collings' Channel Four TV series, is devoted to four painters: Titian, Rubens, Velasquez, and Hogarth. The inclusion of Hogarth with three such acknowledged masters is an admirable example of the intellectual boldness which illuminates Collings' writing. He recognizes Hogarth's achievements in an age when painting in England had little tradition and even less value in comparison with that of Italy, Holland, and Spain. English kings had previously commissioned foreign painters like Holbein or Van Dyck to paint their portraits. Collings further demonstrates the fact that Hogarth shared with his three predecessors a sheer love of colour and of the medium of paint, and the ability to use it to great effect. The painting Heads of Six of Hogarth's Servants never fails to move me. The book is crammed with interesting insights into the lives and times of these four artists and is embellished with sumptuous colour reproductions of their work. Highly recommended.(Kirkus UK)
