Renewable Diesel: Value Chain, Sustainability, and Challenges presents a holistic reference on the production of renewable diesel, from fundamentals to state-of-the-art. In addition to an in-depth assessment of biomass conversation processes and available technologies, the book considers engineering and mathematical aspects such as design, economics and sustainability. Production processes, fuel properties and fuel quality standards are all addressed in detail alongside state-of-the-art information on conversion routes, catalysts, combustion characteristics, emission profile, techno-economic and lifecycle appraisal, and integration of renewable diesel production into existing refineries. A chapter on biodiesel and hydroprocessed vegetable oil offers a comparative analysis with conventional biodiesel pro’s and con’s.

Finally, readers are provided with an overview of techno-economic, environmental, logistical and strategic hurdles and opportunities in the commercialization and marketability of renewable diesel. This book provides readers with a unique and comprehensive reference on the production of renewable diesel that will be of interest to students, researchers and professionals involved in bioenergy, renewable energy, biotechnology, chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science and sustainability sciences.

Dr. Dipesh Kumar is an Assistant Professor at Nalanda University Centre Neemrana Tribhuvan College of Environment and Development Sciences Rajasthan, India. As part of Ph.D. research, he worked on the synthesis of biodiesel from non-edible feedstocks of Indian origin and improvement of their fuel properties using novel environmentally benign approaches. He has a total of 18 scholarly publications, including 10 articles in highly cited journals (09 in Q1 and 01 in Q4) in the field of renewable energy and environmental engineering to his credit. The average impact factor of his publications is 5.758, and to date, his contributions have received over 180 citations. His research interests lie in clean alternative fuels, life cycle assessment, and techno-economic viability of alternative biofuels and biorefinery. Dr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta began his research career in 1999 at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, India, previously known as the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre. His doctoral degree was awarded in 2010. He did two years (2012-14) post-doctoral research at the Institute for Water and Wastewater Technologies, Durban University of Technology, South Africa. He received an award as “one of the top post-doctoral fellows” for four years for his meritorious research contributions. Dr. Gupta’s research interests lie in environmental monitoring and ecotoxicological risk assessment, water and wastewater, algal technologies for bioremediation and biofuel production. He has co-edited three books. One of his book entitled “Algal Biofuels” is among the top performing 25% books of the subject since publication in 2017. His two co-edited books on “Catalysis for Clean Energy and Environmental Sustainability” are in press. He is a reviewer for more than 50 international journals. He has published 48 research articles in peer-reviewed high-impact international journals, 36 book chapters with reputed international publishers. Dr. Bhaskar Singh received his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, UP, India, in 2010. He also holds an M. Phil. from Pondicherry (Central) University, India, with a gold medal (2006). He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jharkhand, Ranchi, India. Dr. Singh is currently engaged in teaching in the thrust areas of environmental sciences like environmental earth science, natural resources, environmental chemistry, environmental pollution monitoring and, control technologies, etc. He is a reviewer of several international journals, viz., Fuel, Renewable Energy, and Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews. His current interests lie in the application of algal biomass for biodiesel synthesis, development of heterogeneous and green catalysts, and corrosion aspects of biodiesel fuel. He has published more than 40 research and review papers in peer-reviewed and high-impact international journals and 14 book chapters by international publishers. He has co-edited & co-authored 3 books.
