The type of surgery which is meant to restore the form and function of the body is known as reconstructive surgery. It may include simple techniques, such as primary closure and dressings, as well as complex skin grafts, free flaps and tissue expansion. It does not include cosmetic surgery, which is concerned merely with the purpose of improving a person's physical appearance and the removal of one's signs of aging. Some of the branches of surgery under which reconstructive surgeries often take place include pediatric surgery, podiatric surgery and gynaecological surgery. Biomaterials are used in reconstructive surgery for correcting or replacing damaged body parts. A successful implantation can be achieved through an anatomical, biochemical, pathological and physiological understanding of the condition.
