I've been advising owners of small businesses for over thirty years. I also write science fiction. Which do you think is more fun? I love all my work. I've worked with just about every kind of small business-ranging from solopreneurs up to a hundred or more employees. I have an MBA, but please don't hold that against me.I've learned a lot about the issues most every small business faces-marketing, finances, hiring good people, managing growth, dealing with their own management style. I have to talk with them in their language-no high-falutin professor terms. Sometimes I see their eyes begin to glaze over when I say ""strategic planning,"" so I've learned to keep it concrete and real.Out of this experience working with biz owners, I've written a number of books and workbooks. They are all described on my website. For many years I conducted business owner groups, where eight to ten owners met each month to get feedback on the problems they were facing, and to stay accountable for the goals they set. Each year we held an Annual Plan Workshop. My wife BJ and I worked together for many years. She was a human resources consultant, the perfect complement to my consulting skills. Some of my workbooks are co-authored by her. Even though we lived and worked together for fifty years, we were still best friends. Alas, she recently passed away.I'm a strong advocate for small business owners. I've had three businesses over the years, so I've made every mistake in the book. But I've never looked back. Having my own business has been by far the best life track for me. Hey, it leaves time to write science fiction.
""I've been part of Mike Van Horn's business group since 2005, and his guidance has consistently helped me gain clarity and make smarter decisions. Mike has a unique ability to zero in on what matters most, ask the tough but necessary questions, and create a space where business owners feel both supported and challenged. His insight and leadership have been invaluable to me over the years."" -Lorna Beukema, Owner, Nursing & Rehab At Home / Agility Health I was part of Mike Van Horn's business group. As a small and new business owner I found his suggestions about invoicing, marketing, time use, and a whole host of other things useful. He was also helpful and kind. Mike's group was one of the reasons my business was a success. Susanna Solomon, electrical engineer
