From telling off a principal to a mutiny in the British army, from building a castle from a dream to visualizing the end product of a building renovation, somehow the dots connect. What started as a recounting of treasured memories gradually took on characteristics of a dot-to-dot puzzle. As I added memory to memory, I became aware of connections I had never noticed before. When workplace sabotage brought to light a rare genetic liver condition, I did not welcome it as part of my heritage, but you don't get to choose your heritage. Recalling joys, triumphs and never before admitted misdeeds of my youth connected more dots in the puzzle. These stories are meant to be read and enjoyed individually, as I wrote them. They will likely trigger memories from your own life; take time to honour and enjoy your stories as they come to mind. As I added story to story, I gradually realized my heritage was like a blueprint that I was largely unaware of but which, in retrospect, I realize has played a part in shaping me.

Douglas McRae took his teacher training at the University of Victoria. He has a B.Ed degree with majors in English and Geography and an M.Ed in Education Administration. After a career teaching in the Cariboo area of British Columbia was cut short by a health crisis, he became involved as a distributor of the herbal products that extended his life. The personalized editorials he wrote for their newsletter were always well-received. This is his first book, but Doug has always been keenly aware of the power of story-telling in both spoken and written forms.
