The more your company grows, the harder it can be to grow yet further. Why? Because the management practices and habits that worked when your company was smaller are no longer adequate.

You might be the main bottleneck. You may not be ""presidential"" enough in your management style. You must ""promote yourself to CEO""-that is, focus on executive responsibilities and be less of a floor manager and worker.

Easier said than done! While you are trying to keep your focus on the entire forest, many things conspire to keep you stuck in the trees and underbrush.

The exercises in this book will help you upgrade your management style, management practices and management structure-for yourself and for your key people-so that you can take your company where you want it to go.

Mike Van HornI've been advising owners of small businesses for over thirty years. I also write science fiction. Which do you think is more fun? I love all my work. I've worked with just about every kind of small business-ranging from solopreneurs up to a hundred or more employees. I have an MBA, but please don't hold that against me.I've learned a lot about the issues most every small business faces-marketing, finances, hiring good people, managing growth, dealing with their own management style. I have to talk with them in their language-no high-falutin professor terms. Sometimes I see their eyes begin to glaze over when I say ""strategic planning,"" so I've learned to keep it concrete and real.Out of this experience working with biz owners, I've written a number of books and workbooks. They are all described on my website. For many years I conducted business owner groups, where eight to ten owners met each month to get feedback on the problems they were facing, and to stay accountable for the goals they set. Each year we held an Annual Plan Workshop. My wife BJ and I worked together for many years. She was a human resources consultant, the perfect complement to my consulting skills. Some of my workbooks are co-authored by her. Even though we lived and worked together for fifty years, we were still best friends. Alas, she recently passed away.I'm a strong advocate for small business owners. I've had three businesses over the years, so I've made every mistake in the book. But I've never looked back. Having my own business has been by far the best life track for me. Hey, it leaves time to write science fiction.
