She holds a Master's degree is in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction, is a certified reading specialist, and has credential certifications in teaching bilingual education, early childhood education, and Spanish as a foreign language.She is the founding editor of Iguana, the Spanish magazine for children, which she published for 10 years. For her commitment to childhood literacy, she received the 2005 Anna María Arias Memorial Business Fund; the 2008 Latino Future Magazine Business Award; and, the 2009 Children's Publication Award from the National Association of Multicultural Education.
