Parsonages packs a lot in across six chronological chapters, yet remains highly accessible. Indeed, it is an excellent book for anyone new to the topic. There is a brief explanation of what might first appear to be bewildering terms and phases: the distinction between a rectory and vicarage, appropriated livings, Tithe Commutation etc. There are over 70 colour illustrations - almost one per page - all of which provide helpful exemplars. Moreover, this book can help those whose appetites have been whetted by offering practical advice for research. -- Sarah Rose * The Local Historian * Dr Tiller's book is an admirable brief survey of these important buildings and their occupants, from early times until the present day. -- Nicholas Orme * Church Times *
