Although born and raised about as far from the sea as possible in Wolverhampton, the author's lifetime interest in ships and shipping was aroused after taking holidays in Southampton in the early '60s; initially taking photographs but then taking a further interest in researching details of the histories of the ships and their owning companies. After moving to the Southampton area after graduating, he became a life-member of World Ship Society and also joined the local Solent Maritime Society. Although career moves necessitated moves around the country, he returned to the South some 15 years ago and eventually became Hon Secretary of Solent Maritime Society. He has produced a number of illustrated talks on various aspects of shipping and shipbuilding which he presents at various Society meetings. He has had many shipping related articles published in Ships Monthly and contributed photographs for a previous edition of Ocean Ships.
