Rajasthan, in northern India, is home to the Bishnoi, a desert people whose religion is built around nature and wildlife conservation. They are renowned for the extreme lengths they go to defend nature: Bishnoi have died to defend trees from loggers and in pursuit of illegal poachers.

The co-founder of Client Earth, a non-profit environmental law organisation, he has written nine books of fiction and non-fiction, and is the Chair of Creative Writing at the University of Hull, where he directs the Phillip Larkin Centre for Poetry and Creative Writing.
