Reviews for Friends with Disabilities My Friend Has Down Syndrome

Excellent new series from Picture Window Books: FRIENDS WITH DISABILITIES It has 4 titles, all written by Amanda Doering Tourville, illus. by Kristin Sorra: MY FRIEND HAS AUTISM; MY FRIEND HAS ADHD, MY FRIEND HAS DOWN SYNDROME; MY FRIEND HAS DYSLEXIA. Over the years I have had a number of books on these subjects to sell. Some have been straightforward, non-fiction titles, some are fiction that lightly may touch on these subjects. Tourville's books are fiction, but loaded with facts about these conditions. The main characters talk to their friends with these conditions, frankly let us know where the problems come up, and how to deal with the frustrations of communication. These books are written for 7-9 year-olds, but there were a few facts that were also quite enlightening for me. I will never try to re-arrange and autistic person's things, for assistance. They most likely will be displeased -- at best. These would be great for home, but can be found at your library soon. Happy reading everybody!-- ""Great K To 8th Grade Books Blog"" My Friend Has Down Syndrome is a story of two girls, Sarah, who has Down Syndrome and Carmen. The book highlights their differences and similarities. It explains to children that although kids with Down Syndrome may look different, everyone looks different. It also mentions how kids with Down Syndrome go to the doctor often. However, Carmen always cheers Sarah up when she returns to school. Kids with Down Syndrome enjoy many of the same things every other kid enjoys such as plays, movies, dance, and have goals for work just the same. It also highlights their differences and how it's coped with, such as learning at a slower pace. In the book, Sarah gets one-on-one time with her teacher and learns the same as her friends. For every new aspect mentioned in the book, a fact is followed on the opposite page backing it up. This book isn't only entertaining, but educational. In the back of the book a glossary of terms is found as is a short and easy to understand explanation on Down Syndrome.-- ""Unique Me magazine""
