The growing emphasis on complexity concerns for ontologies has attracted signi cant interest from both the researchers' and the practitioners' communities in modularization techniques as a way to decrease the complexity of managing huge ontologies.
Researchhasproducedmanycomplementaryandcompetingapproaches, mainly with the goal of supportingpractitioners' methodologieswith sound and p- cisely de nedfoundationsand alternatives.
Existing prototypessubstantiate research results and experimental evaluations have been performed. Thus, a large body of work is available. This book has been designed to provide the reader with a detailed analysis of where we stand today and which concepts, theories and techniques for knowledge modularization we can con dently rely on. The material for the book has been - lected from research achievements that are mature enough to be considered as a rm and reliable basis on which to inspire further work and to develop solutions in c- crete environments. The content of the book has been organized in three parts. Part I holds a general introductionto theidea andissuescharacterizingmodularization.
Thisisfollowedby three chapters that offer an in-depth analysis of properties, criteria and knowledge import techniques for modularization. The last chapter discusses one of the three approaches that implement the modularization idea. The two other approaches are covered in detail in parts II and III.
Modularization Approaches.- to Part I.- An Overview of Modularity.- Formal Properties of Modularisation.- Criteria and Evaluation for Ontology Modularization Techniques.- On Importing Knowledge from Ontologies..- Modularity in Databases.- Partitioning and Extraction of Modules.- to Part II.- Extracting Modules from Ontologies: A Logic-Based Approach.- Structure-Based Partitioning of Large Ontologies.- Web Ontology Segmentation: Extraction, Transformation, Evaluation.- Traversing Ontologies to Extract Views.- Connecting Existing Ontologies.- to Part III.- Formal and Conceptual Comparison of Ontology Mapping Languages.- Ontology Integration Using ?-Connections.- Composing Modular Ontologies with Distributed Description Logics.- Package-Based Description Logics.
Reviews for Modular Ontologies: Concepts, Theories and Techniques for Knowledge Modularization
Clearly outlining a complex situation, this Headliner will serve well as background for current events. Ricciuti's flowing narrative presents Somalia's war-torn history, pointing out its strategic location as an important factor. Unlike Africa's other colonial creations, Somalia is free of ethnic conflict, but the stresses of an arid climate, border warfare, and clan divisions have starved the country and made it ungovernable, says Ricciuti, thus leading to foreign occupation. Wisely, he hedges the optimistic mainstream view that the new Transitional National Council will lead to peace: Its success would depend on the cooperation and commitment of Somalia's people. Personalities like warlord clan leaders and celebrities appearing for charitable relief are mentioned but not profiled. Illustrations are well chosen and captioned, though some maps are in more detail than the text demands (e.g., Areas receiving aid ). Chronology; short bibliography; index. (Kirkus Reviews)
