This book offers a global perspective on how Anglican ministry evolved throughout a century marked by radical upheavals and dramatic changes in theological, social, and political perspectives.

That history begins with the end of the Victorian era, when Anglicanism had spread around the world but was deeply enmeshed with colonialism and it was assumed that it was shaped and defined by its North Atlantic history. Kater explores how the Anglican Way became rooted in widely different contexts and identifies the many pressures and movements that challenged that history—including two world wars, a global Depression, anti-colonialism and the struggles against the many forms of oppression and discrimination that marked the century. This book is the story of how Anglican ministry has been broadened and deepened by its constantly growing diversity even as that diversity has brought new challenges.

Reviews for Ministry in the Anglican Tradition: The Twentieth Century

Both erudite and accessible, Dr. Kater's further exploration of ministry in the Anglican Communion paints a picture of the rich work of missionaries and indigenous leaders in a controversial and ever-evolving global landscape. Dr. Kater's writing is lively and engaging for the reader as he taps into our curiosity about the more recent past and leads us to wonder about what is next for the Anglican Communion. * The Rt. Rev. Lucinda Ashby, Fourth Bishop, the Diocese of El Camino Real, USA * This volume is a succinct, informative and comprehensive treatment of the essentials of ministry in Anglican tradition. This is a valuable resource for all of those who seek to understand and comprehend the vitality and challenging variety of Anglican Ministry. This is a much needed, very welcome and timely contribution at a decisive time of Anglican Communion. * The Most Rev. Paul Kwong, Archbishop Emeritus of Hong Kong and Principal, HKSKH Ming Hua Theological College, Hong Kong *
