Cultural norms and assumptions color the male experience of psychotherapy, and the traditional notions of masculinity to which many men still cling are, in many ways, antithetical to the tenets and goals of therapy. As a result, even the experienced therapist may find him- or herself struggling when working with male clients. In Men in Therapy, therapists are offered a number of methods for countering men's general reluctance to open up emotionally or fully engage in therapy. Of course, men cannot be reduced to a single, monolithic group; rather, they start therapy due to a wide range of needs, and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Therefore, individual chapters are devoted to the treatment of men in relationships, men suffering from depression, fathers, men who abuse women, and men of color. In each case, Wexler provides an informative overview of the issues unique to each group, sound advice, and commonsense methods for treating each of these groups effectively, nonjudgmentally, and professionally.

Reviews for Men in Therapy: New Approaches for Effective Treatment

This book is a wonderful contribution to both the study of men's issues and the larger mental health field. Wexler wrote with the practitioner in mind and he has succeeded in creating an accessible text for both novice and seasoned professionals. As someone who has studied, written about, and treated men in therapy for over 35 years, I have long considered David Wexler to be among the 'best of the best.' Men in Therapy reveals the critical insights and novel approaches that distinguish his work with men and couples-and takes the psychology of men to the next level. A terrific resource for all and a must-read. -- Ken Druck, PhD, author, The Secrets Men Keep For those familiar with Norton professional books, David Wexler's Men in Therapy follows a long and distinguished history of clearly written, well-researched, comprehensive, cutting-edge Norton texts...Wexler has raised the standard and sketched out basic parameters for therapy with men...His thinking is pleasingly fresh, and he writes with a crispness and personal openness. David Wexler offers us an overview of how the worlds of masculinity and therapeutic growth connect and collide. This is an eminently readable book and a much-needed contribution to the field of psychotherapy. -- Susan Johnson, EdD, CPsych, professor of clinical psychology, University of Ottawa, and research professor, Alliant University, San Diego David Wexler has used his considerable clinical skills in writing Men in Therapy, devoted to special issues in treating men ... [He] has written a gem that does the job. -- Don Dutton, PhD, author, The Abusive Personality I am so impressed with this book that I have prescribed it to several female clients who want to better understand the men in their lives. -- Dr. Bryan Knight We recommend this book to any mental health professional interested in improving his or her knowledge base and therapeutic skills with male patients...
