Is the Bible the infallible word of God? Do souls go to heaven when people die? Do Christians believe that their ultimate commitment is the realm of God, above all other bonds? For the reader who has ever considered such questions, or who has other queries about Christian faith and practices, this book addresses these issues. The author, throughout sixty years of pastoral and priestly ministry, has raised many questions in his journey with Jesus about the faith and practices of contemporary Christianity. Doubts about faith and practice as Christians are not a betrayal of Jesus. They are the starting line for the race to achieve what could be called a reasoned faith, a belief that is audacious enough to shake off simple answers to the most complex challenges Christians face. Personal vignettes from experiences as a pastor and priest are presented to highlight the theme of each of the chapters. The author, who has occasionally said with tongue in cheek that he would rather officiate at a funeral than a wedding ""because the principals don't talk back,"" looks at five of the church's seven sacraments. The final chapter images God through the lens of the Star Wars trilogies.

Reviews for Memoirs of a Doubting Thomas

""The Rev. Fr. Don Turner, former vicar of Trinity Church, River Falls, in the Diocese of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where I served as bishop, is a dear friend. He has just written a book that covers so many subjects including church and state, the role and development of Scripture, clergy relations with parishes, as well as his own ministry experiences. While he feared I might disagree with parts of the work, I found it quite well researched and excellently written. I commend it highly."" --William C. Wantland, Bishop Emeritus of Eau Claire ""As a fellow 'doubting Thomas' I looked forward to reading this memoir and I wasn't disappointed in the least! I was especially grateful for Father Turner's thoughts on 'Resurrection of the Dead--the Life of the World to Come, ' something I've never quite been able to wrap my mind around until now. Turner's words have done more than any number of sermons to open my mind and heart to what awaits me as a Christian after death. Father Turner writes with clarity and conviction. His strong faith is evident on every page but so is his warmth and compassion for us fellow doubters. More than just a devotional reading, Memoirs of a Doubting Thomas is a work for any Christian seeking a deeper understanding of the reality of Emmanuel, God with us."" --Philip Clinton, Founder, The Wandering Academic
