This book presents the physics, fabrication, transport phenomena, and applications of carbon-based membranes. Beginning with their historical development and fundamental properties, it examines the diverse types of carbon materials, including graphene, carbon nanotubes, and activated carbon, and their contributions to membrane performance. The text details synthesis techniques such as Chemical Vapor Deposition, pyrolysis, and sol-gel processing, as well as advanced pore engineering and surface modifications. Transport mechanisms for gases and liquids are discussed through theoretical, experimental, and simulation-based approaches. Applications in water purification, gas separation, carbon capture, energy storage, and biomedical systems are highlighted. The book concludes with perspectives on future trends, challenges, commercialization potential, and the role of AI in designing next-generation carbon-based membranes.

Introduction to carbon based membranes.- Synthesis and fabrication techniques.- Transport mechanisms in carbon membranes.- Applications in environmental and energy sectors.- Future perspectives and challenges.

Dr. Hairus Abdullah earned his doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2016. He remained at NTUST as a postdoctoral fellow until 2019 and currently serves as a faculty. Since 2012, he has also contributed academically at Universitas Prima Indonesia (UNPRI) in Medan. His research primarily focuses on photocatalysis, including hydrogen evolution, hydrogenation of toxic species, antibacterial applications, and electrocatalysis, with recent extensions into photoelectrochemistry and supercapacitors. His impactful work has garnered significant citations, leading to his recognition in 2025 among the top 2% of scientists globally, according to Stanford's ranking. Dr. Januar Widakdo is a lecturer and researcher specializing in membrane technology, advanced materials, magnetic technology, and carbon-based nanomaterials, with a particular focus on photocatalysis for hydrogen production. He also coordinates research collaborations between academic institutions in Indonesia and international partners, and leads the Materials for Separation, Technology, Energy, and Research Group (MASTER Group) at Universitas Indonesia. His expertise bridges fundamental physics with practical applications, aiming to develop sustainable and high-performance membrane systems for energy and environmental solutions.
