..... tells the inspiring true story of an ex-teacher who swaps costly package tours for the unpredictable adventure of Couchsurfing. What begins as a frugal alternative soon becomes a journey of generosity, priceless cultural exchange, and unexpected friendships. A global adventure - from meeting local women at a party in Saudi Arabia to spiritual evenings by the fireside in the Sacred Valley, Peru and a roadtrip around the tropical island of Mauritius, each experience challenges her assumptions about people, comfort, and belonging. Part memoir, part practical guide, this warm and wanderlust-inducing book offers a candid look at how opening your door - and your mind - can turn travel into something truly transformative.

Julie Eggleton is an ex-teacher, in her 50s, who has been on an extended senior gap year for the last 60 months and has no plans to slow down yet! In fact she has become the ultimate BUDGET TRAVELLER who often travels solo (Federal Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kosovo....) and stretches her money creatively so she can keep exploring the world. Most recently this has been by joining the platform called Couchsurfing, staying for free in the homes of local people in South America, the Middle East and most recently Africa. The interactions she has experienced whilst doing so were priceless. Strangers quickly became friends. Read her guide to budget travel and her many adventures in her first book, published in 2026 Meeting the Unknown - Volume One: Connecting with Strangers across the Globe Julie is currently writing the follow up, based on her recent trip through 13 African countries, meeting more extraordinary people: Meeting the Unknown- Volume Two: Connecting with Strangers in Africa She has visited 130 countries so far..... When she is not travelling she lives with her Supportive Husband and 2 black and white cats in her cosy cottage in rural Essex. Contact Julie at martin_julie935@btinternet.com
