This book analyzes the likelihood of intelligent civilizations from two different standpoints: firstly, using the famous Drake equation and, secondly, by analyzing some of the most popular hypotheses about the likely behavior of intelligent alien civilizations. The existence of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations in the universe is one of the most intriguing scientific and philosophical problems. Is it possible that we are the only intelligent species in this incredibly vast universe? Enrico Fermi, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, posed the same question during a lunch with his colleagues in 1950. What are the implications for a universe where there is only one intelligent species? The universe may be stranger than we think.

Luigi Vacca is a plasma physicist with a doctoral degree from MIT in plasma physics and minor in philosophy . Additionally, he earned a Laurea cum Laude from La Sapienza in Nuclear Engineering.  As a graduate student at MIT, he researched the physics of tokamaks at the MIT Research Laboratory of Electronics, where he participated in several internal publications. After earning his doctorate, Luigi decided to work for financial institutions because they paid better than doing physics research. His deep understanding of probability and statistics allowed him to design mathematical models of derivative instruments for the financial industry. He has published mathematical finance articles in established magazines for finance professionals. After the financial industry collapse in 2008, he moved on to AI, learning the inner workings of neural networks while studying at MIT. Since 2008, he has been working on AI applications in many of his tasks as head of machine learning. He holds a patent on artificial intelligence applied to healthcare. Currently, Luigi is working for an AI startup based in Philadelphia, where he designs models for giving wellness advice to customers. He constantly stays up-to-date on the latest scientific and philosophical advances, his passion being to seek scientific and philosophical answers to the mysteries of our time.
