Ces trois dernières décennies, lors de ses rôles de consultant en gestion et de bénévole, l'auteur a eu la grâce étonnante de chasser la lumière avec sa caméra, et s'est lancé dans des expéditions dans une vingtaine de pays. Cependant, il devait encore voir un endroit où plus de 500 dieux descendent sur la terre pendant une seule saison. Entre la chaîne de montagnes des Ghâts de l'Ouest (un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO) et la mer d'Arabie, recouverts de verdure naturelle, les vallons du Malabar du Nord ouvrent leurs chemins atypiques pour que les dieux de Theyyam embrassent les disciples abandonnés par les dieux. Grâce à ces dieux de Theyyam, Malabar est cette terre vraiment brillante sur une colline. Ces dieux se doublent de costumiers, peintres, musiciens, artisans, batteurs et chorégraphes. Ils transcendent les royaumes humains et se sont développés en une forme mystique, où ils endurent des feux ardents et portent des costumes lourds sans effort. La deuxième partie du livre se lance dans la tâche herculéenne de couvrir les siècles, relatant 101 histoires de Theyyam. Comme les Blues dans le delta du Mississippi, ils utilisent le chant et la danse.
