Vuillard's greatest achievement as a printmaker, and some of the most characteristic images of his career are illustrated within this portfolio, with their intimate focus and rich but exquisitely judged use of colour. Vuillard's fascination with pattern and texture, and his almost tactile, painterly style are given free rein in the thirteen etchings of this collection. They range from genteel, claustrophobic interiors to rapturous country views and colourful street scenes. This is one of the three hugely original portfolios of etchings brought out in 1899 by the great dealer Ambroise Vollard, and printed by the master craftsman Auguste Clot. The other two are by Pierre Bonnard and Maurice Denis, and all three are being published simultaneously by Pallas Athene.

Originally part of the group known as the Nabis, he developed a sensual but very delicate technique, (often reminiscent of the textiles that his family was involved with), that could be used to equal effect on any scale from miniature to monumental.
