ABBEY'S BOOKSELLER PICK ----- You always know you are going to be taken to a different place with every Ishiguro novel and happily, this new one is no exception! Klara is an AF, and it takes awhile to understand that she is a solar-powered artificial being with intelligence and greater self-awareness than others. She possesses both concern and curiosity about the world around her, and constructs a particular view of it which is both logical and naïve.
When she is chosen to be the AF (artificial friend) of a young girl, it is the fulfilment of her purpose for existence, and she becomes inextricably involved in Josie's life. But Josie has problems, and Klara observes far more than she is supposed to… A brilliant book which examines the concepts of 'life' and 'intelligence' - it is thoughtful and meditative but also tells a story that you can't help but become invested in. A very fine book indeed! Lindy
From the bestselling and Booker Prize winning author of Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day, a stunning new novel - his first since winning the Nobel Prize in Literature - that asks, what does it mean to love?
This is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behaviour of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass in the street outside. She remains hopeful a customer will soon choose her, but when the possibility emerges that her circumstances may change for ever, Klara is warned not to invest too much in the promises of humans.
A thrilling feat of world-building, a novel of exquisite tenderness and impeccable restraint, Klara and the Sun is a magnificent achievement, and an international literary event.
